From the Inside Flap

"The Touch of Healing offers readers the means to greater health, vitality, and self-understanding through the practice of an ancient oriental healing art and practical holistic philosophy called Jin Shin Jystsu. Gentle touching similar to acupressure is used to release tension that accumulates and is at the root of dysfunction, disease, and imbalance. The authors explain the natural life force that runs through the body and demonstrate with case studies, detailed analysis, and more than 30 illustrations, how to integrate this system into one's life. The key healing points and body flows, known as "Safety Energy Locks," are presented with step-by-step instructions on how to utilize them for healing and greater self-awareness. Many self-help practices are also offered that address a wide array of common ailments, including headaches, digestive disorders, fatigue, depression, and arthritis along with prescriptive exercises for relief of emotional ailments such as loss of confidence, anxiety, and depression.

the foundations of the art      chapter one          We live in an age of information. The media are able to broadcast global events within seconds of their occurrence. The Internet links us to specialized data. Increasingly, we hope that scientific and technological advances will grant us a better understanding of ourselves, along with the secrets of well-being.   Our growing reliance upon external information has gradually obscured a simple, innate awareness that all of us have long possessed. Inherent in this awareness are all the tools that we need to genuinely enrich our health and the quality of our lives.     A student seeking to familiarize herself with the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu attended her first class.   During the lunch break, the student introduced herself to the teacher, Mary Burmeister. She confessed to feeling a bit overwhelmed. “I’m afraid that I don’t know anything about Jin Shin Jyutsu.”   Mary smiled and said, “You already know everything about it.”   The art of Jin Shin Jyutsu enables us to re-experience this awareness. Moreover, it teaches us how to utilize it for greater physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. No complicated technique or effort is required to apply it. Its seeds have lain dormant within us for virtually thousands of years. In order to revive them, we need only heed Plato’s teaching that “learning is remembering.”   the life in all things   In ancient times traditional people saw no distinction between body, mind, and spirit. Consequently, the practices they used to assist the body naturally promoted physical, emotional, and spiritual wholeness. Moreover, people saw their health or “harmony” as dependent upon bringing seemingly disparate elements into balance.   Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced jin shin jitsu) helps us remember that every one of us possesses the simplest instruments needed to bring about harmonious balance—the breath and hands. It reminds us that these instruments are all that we need to enhance our physical and mental vitality, which in turn help eliminate the causes underlying disease, or “disharmony.” Most importantly, it reawakens our awareness of the life energy that permeates the universe. This renewed awareness enables us to send life-giving energy through various locations on the body.   The concept of a life energy that pervades the universe and gives life to all things is unfamiliar to many of us. In much of the Western world, we’re likely to view life as nothing more than certain chemical processes that make possible the utilization of energy, metabolism, growth, and reproduction.   This concept, given to us by modern science, focuses on the biological aspects of life. From its point of view, life begins and ends with biology, or with the physical part of life. But practitioners of Jin Shin Jyutsu—and indeed, traditional people everywhere—ask themselves: What powers these chemical interactions? What gives life to our organs and systems? What is the force that brings the body to life?   In seeking the answers to these questions, traditional people learned to look beyond to the underlying energy that vitalizes the physical body. They see life as pervaded by a single living force, manifested in every individual organism—plants, insects, animals, and human beings. The ancient Greeks referred to this energy as pneuma; the Hindus call it prana; the Chinese know it as chi (also qi), and the Japanese, ki.   The recognition of a life energy that animates all living things is not merely a philosophical belief. It is also a practical approach to life and healing. Indeed, virtually all traditional healing systems—from Ayurvedic to Greek and Chinese—are founded on the principle that in order to heal the body, the person must strengthen and harmonize the flow of life energy within. This principle provides the basis for such arts as acupuncture and acupressure, as well as for the healing herbs and foods of Chinese medicine.   Mary Burmeister, who introduced Jin Shin Jyutsu to the Western world more than forty years ago, illustrates the importance of life energy by using a simple analogy: “What makes a car engine start when you turn on the key? The battery of the car. The battery is the necessary energy source for the various functions of the car. Now, what makes a heart beat? What makes breathing possible? What makes digestion possible? The Battery of Life. An energy source is necessary for the body to function. That source is the battery of life.”   Our health or harmony depends upon the free and even distribution of this life energy throughout our body, mind, and spirit. When the stress and strain of daily living disrupts the movement of life energy, our mind, body, and spirit are all affected. Not only do we succumb to worry, fear, anger, sadness, and pretensions, but we increase our tendency to become ill or “out of balance.”   Quite simply, Jin Shin Jyutsu is a way to balance the life energy. It shows us how to use simple hands-on sequences to restore emotional equilibrium, relieve pain, and release the causes of both acute and chronic conditions. It can be used safely in conjunction with any other therapy or medication. Furthermore, its benefits are cumulative, so that the more we practice it, the greater is our vitality and self-knowledge.   Jin Shin Jyutsu can be used anywhere and at any time. Its methods are so easy and unobtrusive that you may use them on yourself in a crowded bus or in the middle of a difficult meeting. The only thing people may notice—if they notice anything at all—is a more balanced demeanor, an aura of relaxation, and—upon closer examination—that you are holding one or more of your fingers.   the forgotten art, recently remembered   The name Jin Shin Jyutsu means “The Art of the Creator through the person of compassion.” The healing art that those words represent is based upon our own natural, innate ability to harmonize ourselves. For thousands of years, ancient peoples used this awareness to heal both themselves and others. But with successive generations this awareness grew dimmer until it was all but forgotten. In the early part of the twentieth century, a Japanese sage named Jiro Murai recovered Jin Shin Jyutsu—out of necessity.   Jiro Murai was born in Taiseimura (currently Kaga City), in Ishikawa Prefecture, in 1886. He was the second son born to his parents. Jiro’s father, like his father and so many of his ancestors, was a medical doctor. Since Japanese custom expected that the eldest son would follow in the profession of his father, Jiro was free to choose his own path. He started out as a breeder of silkworms, but he had a reckless nature and overindulged in food and drink—even to the point of entering eating contests, in which he was awarded cash prizes for consuming huge quantities. By the time he was 26, he was seriously ill. A succession of doctors treated him, but his condition only worsened until he was pronounced incurable and given up for terminally ill. As a last request, he asked his family to carry him on a stretcher to their mountain cabin and to leave him there alone for seven days. He asked that they return for him on the eighth day.   There in the cabin Murai fasted, meditated, and practiced various finger postures. During this time he passed in and out of consciousness. His physical body grew colder. But on the seventh day he felt as if he had been lifted out of a deep freeze and thrown into a blazing furnace. When the intense heat subsided, he experienced a tremendous calm and inner peace. To his great surprise, he was healed. He dropped to his knees, gave thanks, and pledged his life to the study of healing.   Murai’s commitment to understanding the causes of disharmony was profound. Gil Burmeister remembers him as a man obsessed with the pursuit of knowledge: “Jiro did his research among the homeless in Wano Park, in Tokyo. A large population lived in the park. Jiro would take care of the people there and study the incredible variety of illnesses that these people presented. I remember that he went through a period of studying ear problems for a while. He wanted to work on anybody who had any kind of ear complaint. Once he understood ear problems, he’d go on to something else.” Murai’s prodigious research led him to an awareness of a healing art that he called Jin Shin Jyutsu.   As Murai’s understanding of the Art deepened, the meaning of the name Jin Shin Jyutsu evolved. At first, he used the words to mean “the Art of Happiness,” later “the Art of Longevity.” The meaning further evolved to “the Art of Benevolence” and ultimately to “the Art of the Creator through the person of compassion.”

I have studied numerous Japanese Martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kenjutsu, Tanto jutsu, and Hanbo jutsu) and healing arts (Shiatsu, and Reiki) over the last 55 years, but I had never heard of the Japanese healing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu until recently.Since I am a Reiki master I decided to learn more about Jin Shin Jyutsu and I purchased several books on the subject for a bargain price on Amazon. I just finished reading this excellent 183 page soft cover book (The touch of healing: Energizing body, mind and spirit with the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu by Alice Burmeister with Tom Monte) and found the information easy to understand and apply to myself and other people. I also think using Reiki techniques along with Jin Shin Jyutsu methods make a great combination because both are based upon the application Universal Life Energy healing principles. This book is organized into nine chapters covering the following material: The foundation of the art, the depths and attitudes, the trinity flows, safety energy locks, the organ flows, general daily sequences, harmonizing with the fingers and toes and first aid and on the spot healing. There is also an appendix and bibliography section. If you are seeking an interesting approach to energy healing you may want to check out this book. I found it to be a very informative text.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yoga for seniors and the physically challenged).

Excellent book in so many ways. We began 20+ years ago with Bauer's Acupressure for Everybody, graduated to Michael Gach's books later (also excellent, but more in depth). Acupressure points, and acupressure point sequences ALWAYS help. Every time. Sometimes it takes longer or many repetitions and patience, but they always make a positive difference. This is a new find (for us), and a treasure of useful, helpful, go-to points and sequences to use. Cannot recommend this book on the core elements of this ancient Japanese, rediscovered, Jin Shin Jyutsu highly enough. A bonus is that some of these are so EASY to do, deceptively so, that you can do them while in bed, before sleep, when you wake up before getting up. While waiting on the phone or in a waiting room. Share these points to hold with everyone you know and love, most especially with children. Imagine if every child could help themselves in the very moment of injury or distress just by knowing what and where to touch.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu, you use your arms and hands to "jumper cable," i.e. bypass a congested segment of what's known as meridians in acupuncture. Whereas acupuncture works by increasing or decreasing the flow through "points" that are 1 - 2 millimeters across, Jin Shin Jyutsu works with "Safety Energy Locks" that are 1 - 2 INCHES across, so you can use your hands and actually feel the center part where the flow is strongest. This book is from the lady who brought Jin Shin Jyutsu to the U.S., and gives a very good start for those who have never had a JSJ treatment or tried it themselves. It's co-authored by Tom Monte who is in a class of his own, and gives a great overview of how JSJ works.

The book is a hands-on book. The information presented is clearly written and easy to use. I have a person who is trained in the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu. The combination of experience with the book is a good way to go. It doesn't take much experience to feel the energy flows of the bodyto become activated. I don't believe that any of my physical issues have been healed. My body has respond well to the technique. I feel moredeeply connected to my layers of tissue and can feel different parts of myself more clearly. The book has given me a new way to know my body.I plan to continue deepening my knowledge of myself with the use of this book. I recommend it to people who want to activate and feel partsof themselves that they haven't known before.

I bought this book after being helped with some long standing injuries through a chiropractor who used kinesiology (a form of acupressure), but this book sat on my shelf for a few years. I had some other chronic issues that nobody could help resolve, mainly gall bladder pain in my neck and hip, so I decided to devote time to learning this book. I started with the trinity flows and daily sequences. I spent about an hour every night learning and practicing the routines. Much to my delight, my aches, pains, and stiffness melted away in a few weeks. I don't need to devote as much time every day anymore. I try to do the trinity flows in the morning for about 10 minutes before getting out of bed. At night, I either do the three daily sequences or the energy locks not covered by the trinity flows or daily sequences. Jumper cabling the fingers can be done anywhere and balances all flows, and now I am learning the 12 organ flows too. The only "problem" with following this book is that you start to feel so good you stop practicing and eventually the pains and stiffness comes back. Ha ha. So, just devote some time to learn and practice a little every day, and you will feel like you have a new body. Thank you for blessing us with this information, Alice! May you rest in peace.

Jin Shin Jyutsu literally saved my life. This book is the only link for the general public to obtain basic JSJ self help information. Is much better if one can find a JSJ Self Help class to attend at the same time. This Art for Healing is not about a quick fix. It is about restoring Balance & Harmony to the body, so it can heal itself from within. It is cumulative so expect to practice these incredible flow sequences daily. In the last 30 years I have found nothing that works for me better than Jin Shin Jyutsu. Kept me doctor free for decades and offers me my best quality of life. First time I read the book, some parts were too much for me to absorb. I skipped over those parts and kept reading. After further study and a shift in my awareness, I was able to go back and re-read the book for better comprehension. All one needs is an open mind and their own two hands to help themselves feel better everyday.

The Nature of Code teaches how to simulate natural systems using the Processing program language. Processing is a programming language has built in functionality for simulating natural events, and the language is similar to Java.Beginning chapters are focused on physics and calculus. There were some of the best explanations I have ever seen for showing the concepts and how formulas work. I was thinking how much better it would have been if I had learned calculus from a book like this. There are excellent details how forces, vectors, and angles work. Working examples are implemented in using Processing. The middle of the book tells you which libraries are useful. The author takes the time to explain which parts you want to implement your self and when you should rely on a given library.Later parts of the book go into more advanced natural systems such as simulating biological events. Some genetic algorithms are presented, and lastly the building blocks of neural networks are examined. Descriptions are geared towards beginners and the walk through is quite detailed. This book works whether you want to learn programming or simulate natural events. Examples are shown from a beginner's perspective in a way that leads the reader to clearer understanding.

This is a gentle introduction to the Processing language geared mostly towards beginners/artists who wish to explore writing Processing sketches to simulate the natural world. If you are an experienced programmer in a Java or C++ like programming language you will breeze through it very quickly. However, unlike most other programming books geared towards the beginner this one introduces the reader to more advanced topics like vector math, physics, rudimentary AI, and particle systems in a very accessible way while also introducing more and more features of the language itself. Each chapter builds on the one before it. Obviously, it's not going to be a really deep dive into any of these topics but I feel that Mr. Shiffman overwhelmingly succeeded in presenting the fundamentals of several advanced topics in a very accessible way.

I took the Nature of Code class as a master candidate at NYU ITP back in the Spring of 2012 with Dan Shiffman. Went through pretty much all of the material in this book as it iteratively evolved. This final product is amazing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in motion/physics/programmable art/games/etc. Dan is a great teacher, and this book is definitively reflective of his ability to communicate the concepts behind the Processing language in a simple and intuitive manner ... with a good bit of personality mixed in as well. There are wonderful illustrations and tons of supplementary materials online to make this book even better. It is also pink ... and that is awesome. Overall, you really can't go wrong with this book and it should be on the bookshelf of artists/designers/and coders of all kinds!

I teach high school physics, and have always tried to incorporate a bit of programming into class - solving physics problems and writing code are similar ways of thinking. I came to Processing via the Arduino board while doing "physical computing" with my AP students. Students with no programming experience found Arduino and Processing more accessible than previous classes had found BASIC or VPython, and students with a bit of computing background like Processing's similarity to Java, so it's a language I think I'll stay with for a while for a beginners' class. The book is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for; a framework for coding simple simulations in physics, so that students could see the power of physics as the "engine" behind how things move. They aren't flashy or 3d, but that keeps them simple enough for beginners to grasp, and keeps the focus on the basic principles. Shiffman's writing is clear and to the point, and he goes beyond the traditional physics topics to incorporate cellular automata and neural networks to keep things interesting. I only use a few of the examples with my students, as the book is easily long enough to be a text for a whole course. All physics teacher with an interest in coding should have this on their shelves, where the students can and see leaf through it. Very well done.

I've been using Shiffman's "Learning Processing" book at the text for an intro programming course...a course aimed at computer science and software engineering majors, with a goal of learning Java. Processing has proven to be an enticing way to introduce and gradually make the transition into Java. "Learning Processing" has proven to be a great way to teach it.Now, Shiffman's "The Nature of Code" takes the material to the next level, with intelligent and well-organized coverage of in-depth topics such as vectors, fractals, and cellular automata. I would not recommend beginning programming with this book (though it could be done by a dedicated learner). Rather, I think it helps to be familiar with programming in Processing, and to at least feel comfortable around mathematics. Don't get me wrong...you don't have to be a math whiz to appreciate this book, but Shiffman does not shy away from presenting the necessary mathematics to really help the reader "get" the programming concepts. This could easily become the text for a follow-up to the course I've been teaching. One additional note: it's worth finding Shiffman's website for this book, so that you get a better appreciation for how he went about publishing it and releasing it. He deserves a lot of credit for approaching it the way he did.If someone asks me for a Processing book recommendation, I have typically recommend Shiffman's "Learning Processing". Now, I have a pair of books to recommend...his Processing books are easily my favorite!
